Yemi Shodimu was born and raised in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He spent part of his childhood at the palace of the Alake of Egbaland, where he was exposed to Yoruba culture, traditions, music, dance, costumes, proverbs and storytelling.
His grandmother, Olori Adejoke Gbadebo, played an important role in his upbringing. Through her, he had opportunities to watch performances by legendary theatre practitioners including Hubert Ogunde, Kola Ogunmola, Duro Ladipo and Moses Olaiya, popularly known as Baba Sala.
